I do quite a bit of networking, to build contacts and also to understand the highs and lows of being self employed and a business owner.
In all the networking I do the one thing everyone always asks each other is ‘Why?’, why did you start your business and why bookkeeping.
So I thought I would tell you a bit about me, and why bookkeeping!
I started working in a finance department nearly 20 years ago (gosh that makes me feel old!) and slowly progressed from the office junior through to managing a finance team. During that time I studied for my AAT (Association of Accounting Technician) qualification and then my ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification.
While nearing the completion of my ACCA I realised that I didn’t really want to be a full blown accountant and much preferred doing the ‘nitty gritty’ tasks, like bank reconciliations for example.
Early in 2011 I realised that I was not feeling fulfilled in my role, and lining someone else’s pocket was beginning to become less and less appealing. I had started completing and submitting tax returns for friends and family so drawing on this experience and all I enjoyed about working in finance, LilyIris Accounting was born in 2013.
I enjoyed completing the bookkeeping and payroll for businesses but something was still missing, I still wasn’t 100% satisfied. That’s when I realised being a bookkeeper wasn’t just sorting the transactions for a company, it was about helping the business owner understand the financial performance of their business. Whether that was explaining the different sections of a profit & loss and balance sheet or explaining the different taxes that needed paying and when, that’s when I started to really enjoy running the business and working with my clients. By the end of 2016 the team had grown to include an apprentice, admin assistant and another bookkeeper and we continue to work with clients on a regular basis.
And in case you were wondering where the name came from? My two Grandmothers, Lily & Iris. One I knew and the other I didn’t, both influenced my upbringing one way or another!
